Paul Cezanne Bio, Style, Portraits & Paintings

Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanne was born in France in 1839 and died in 1906. He was part of the Post-Impressionist movement and was greatly influenced by Delacroix, Courbet, and Pissaro. Paul Cezanne was the son of a banker which enabled him to afford struggling as an artist for some time. He studied in Paris where he met his group of future Post Impressionists. In his early years his art was romantic and violent, paralleling his temper – he was shy and withdrawn but was prone to outbreaks of rage. With the encouragement of Pissarro Cezanne tried the impressionist style – plein-air - but eventually found it too restricting. After his father’s death Paul Cezanne returned to Aix-en-Provence where he was born and brought his style to it’s peak. His goal was to create ‘constructions after nature’, following the Impressionist practice of painting the outdoors. Paul Cezanne strayed from the Imressionist style by trying to capture the underlying geometry of the natural world – this earned him the title of Post Impressionist but also inspired the Cubists that followed.
