Georges Seurat

Georges Seurat was born in 1859 in Paris, France and died in 1891 in Paris. Other artists that had a great influence on him included Ingres, Eugene, and Chevreul. Seurat studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and created a style that combined Classicist tradition with Impressionism. Seurat painted in a very specific style that involved many different coloured dots to create the impression of the subject. He uses a screen of paint dots in a variety of intensities and depths to achieve and image. His method is termed Divisionism which eventually became the main influence on the development of Pointillism. This style became a trademark in Seurat’s paintings. Georges Seurat was meticulous in his work as well as the preparation for painting, often taking months to sketch out the subject onto the canvas.
