About Paul Klee - Art, History & Life

Paul Klee

Paul Klee was born in 1940 in Munchenbuchsee Switzerland. His father Hans Klee was a German music teacher so Paul started music and artwork at a young age. By age 7 he was playing the violin and by the age of eight he was playing with chalk given to him by his grandmother. In his early years Paul Klee wanted to be a musician but later chose visual arts. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and finally settled in Munich where he met Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, and other avant-garde artists. Paul Klee met a Bavarian pianist in Munich named Lily Stumpf whom he married and had a son – Felix Paul.

In 1914 Paul Klee visited Tunisia and was impressed with the quality of light there. This region greatly influenced his work along with Italy and Egypt. Klee was one of Die Blaue Vier – The Blue Four – along with Kandinsky, Feininger and Von Jawlensky formed in 1923.

Paul Klee worked with various media such as oil paint, ink, watercolour, or a combination. He is associated with expressionism, cubism, and surrealism but overall his artwork is difficult to classify. Klee taught at the Bauhaus, and at the Dusseldorf Academy from 1931. He was then denounced by the Nazi party for producing ‘degenerate art’ in 1933. In 1933 Klee returned to Switzerland and was dignosed in 1935 with scleroderma. He died in Muralto Switzerland in 1940 leaving at least 8926 works of art. Currently Paul Klee’s paintings can be worth up to $7.5 million each. In June 2005 a museum dedicated to Klee was completed in Bern Switzerland and houses a collection of about 4000 of his works.
