Museum for African Art, New York City
The Museum for African Art focuses on an awareness and exploration of African culture, context, and art and is located near the Guggenheim and the New Museum in New York City. Upon entering the museum you first pass through a store. The art gallery consists of 2 floors that are divided into several rooms. There is a large collection of art and artifacts and the lighting in the interior of the museum creates an eerie shadow effect on the white walls – it’s a great ambience and adds character and mystery to the artwork. You’ll find tons of information about African culture and the symbolic significance of the exhibits. To completely enjoy the museum you’ll want to spend a couple of hours going through everything, and the store is worth a look too! You’ll find African crafts resembling some of the artifacts that you view including leather, wood, ceramic, cloth and straw items. The pieces are lively and creative and reflect the vibrancy of African culture past and present. For more detailed information about the gallery please visit the African art museum official website at www.africanart.org
