Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853 in France and was a leading Post-impressionist and contributor to Expressionism. Van Gogh’s first job was with an art dealer firm, but he was eventually fired because an affair with a woman was affecting his ability to work properly. Vincent van Gogh went on to be a teacher for a little while, and a lay preacher in a Belgian mining district. He was fired from the church because he was too enthusiastic to help the poor. During his time at the church however he discovered his true love – illustrating and painting the local peasants. In 1886 van Gogh went to Paris and developed his style. He was greatly influenced by Millet, Anquetin, and Gauguin. Van Gogh used colors symbolically rather than naturalistically like Gauguin. With the help of his brother Theo, Vincent was able to move to the south of France, and Gauguin soon followed and joined him there. Soon after, the two artists clashed causing Vincent’s mental collapse. This eventually led to his suicide in 1890. Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime yet he remains one of the most sought after artists of our time.
