Rene Lalique

Rene Lalique was born in the village of Ay, France in 1860 and began apprenticing with Parisian Jeweler Louis Aucoq when he was 17 years old. Lalique proceeded to attend the Sydenham Art College in London and in 1885 he took over the workshop of Jules Destape. Lalique begins experimenting with glass in 1893 and begins receiving important commissions from patrons like Calouste Gubenkian, and Sarah Bernhardt. Lalique continues to design Art Deco jewelry, designs perfume labels in 1907, opens a glasswork factory in 1913, and finally closes down his factory in 1937 because of the war. In 1945 Rene Lalique dies.
